The Journal

I am so pleased to start this blog to tell you all about Cartref Gardens! This blog will be about growing cutting flowers, floral design, and some great upcoming workshops I will be putting on.

Right now in February things are definitely stirring for the season ahead. It is time to start planting hardy annuals. These are things like sweet peas, cerinthe, icelandic poppies and godetia. I start these inside in seed trays as it can be too wet and cold to plant outside at this time of year. I’ve been spending lots of time planning and ordering things for growing this year. There are some bare root rose bushes coming that I will be getting the ground ready for. The fruit trees and rose bushes are all getting pruned before they start to bud. The hoophouse is getting cleaned out so it’s ready for seedlings. Due to some low temperatures, at least for here on southern Vancouver Island, I lost a number of dahlia tubers in the winter that were stored in the hoop house. Hopefully the ones that remained in the ground will come back. I’ve also ordered some more new and exciting varieties of dahlias.
